"Banging on a 2900"
Work Session Status Week Ending 03/14/2015
March 17, 2015
One set of rebuilt 26L air brake parts arrived during the week. They were unpacked and secured
in one of our containers.
The search continues for spare valves. Various suppliers are submitting pricing for those items
we deem necessary to have as emergency replacements.
Also we received a brake stand core. Various parts were still attached to the stand and they were
removed. The core had visible metal wasting at one corner which was cut out and new metal will be
installed. The core was sent to a sandblasting company for a thorough cleaning.
Washout plugs and the internal boiler threads are being carefully cleaned and installed.
Bolts for lagging are being welded on. They replace those that were either broken, wasted or lost
due to the firebox side sheet replacement patches.
Machine work continues on the engineer's side steam valve slide to match the restored bronze bearing
guides. The fireman's side is completed and installed. It awaits final shimming adjustments.
Some of the linkage was installed on the fireman's side.
Blind flanges are being fabricated and installed to isolate various areas not to be included during
As with most work sessions superheater pipe fabrication is being done. Cab electrical work continues
Welch's Boiler Service was back at work. The crew finished rolling all the boiler tubes and began
the beading process. They expect to finish all the seal-welding in the firebox Wednesday the 18th.
Weather seems to continue to be good to us except those afflicted with allergies. Hope to see
everyone at the site this week, and as always . . .
Keep on Steamin',
Rick Kirby, CMO
