November 10, 2014
As most of you know by now Trains Magazine has awarded their 2014 Preservation Award to the New Mexico Steam Locomotive & Railroad Historical Society. The $10,000 award will be used to procure air brake components. Those components will be assembled into a state of the art brake stand.
We can’t thank Trains Magazine enough for their generous donation at a time when expensive parts are scheduled to be procured. This is a prestigious gift and we are very grateful to receive it. Thank you to Jim Wrinn, Editor, Kevin P. Keefe, Vice President-Editorial, Publisher, Kalmbach Publishing Co. and their staff!
On site this week parts cleaning and painting continued. Work resumed on the lubricators as new sight glasses were installed and painting was completed. The fireman’s side lubricator was also bolted into place.
Brake pin hardware fabrication progresses as more bushings and pins were produced.
Flexible staybolt sleeve welding continued as well as superheater bundle work. One more bundle was completed and racked in the storage container.
Fabrication of the firebox door sander hole cover began. The plate was cut out with a torch and the broken support stud was removed from the firebox door.
Rework continues on the Walschaert gear bearing surfaces. Overlay welding and machining was completed. Lubrication parts were cleaned and all sharp edges were rounded off. Their companion bearing surfaces are now being checked for high and low areas.
I look forward to seeing you at this site this week. Wednesday won’t be as cool as thought but the wind might make it cooler. We’ve seen worse.
And as always . . .
Keep on Steamin’,
