Work Session Status Week Ending 08/23/2014

This week volunteers continued preliminary work for the September 27th open house. The heavy steel “A” frame parts were removed from the top of a storage container and assembled. It is used to support a large shade tarp. The car mover, “Lurch”, was relocated to the east of the tender leaving enough room for a visiting BNSF locomotive due at open house. The 2926 cab staircase was reinforced and made safe. Old curled up paint was being removed in preparation for new paint.

After several sessions of attempted tramming of the engineer’s side crosshead it was determined it’s supports will need minute amounts of material removed to properly align the crosshead with the steam cylinder. The crosshead was removed and taken to Noor Manufacturing for the milling procedure.

Flexible staybolt sleeve welding continues as well s superheater bundle welding. If you haven’t yet sponsored your bundle get them before they are gone at our website.

Cleaning and painting of various areas of the frame and stayed boiler sections is ongoing.

Herzog was on site Wednesday to reconnect the crossing guard wiring. This needed to be done prior to the finish work on the associated grade crossing. That finish work was completed Saturday.

The machine shop is fabricating various pins and bushings for several brake arms showing uneven wear.

The weather has begun to cool a bit and I feel that there will be very few, if any, 90°+ days until next summer.
