January 29, 2013
We had only one work session this week due to rain on Saturday.
Dave T. began the day painting a pre-heated saddle bearing cap for the reverse gear rod. The second black coat didn’t adhere that well.
Roger J. and Nate P. wiped down the first two side rods to be painted. Preparations were made and the two side rods were taken to the local paint booth. They received the two-part clear paint donated by Bond Paint Co. Bob D., Dave V., Scott E., Frank G., Ken D. and I retrieved them from the paint shop on Friday and stored them in a container on site.
Randy Mc.’s cab crew consisting of Pete O., Morris D. and Jerome A. cleaned off the areas where nuts had been welded on and repainted these areas. More wood was also installed inside.
Danny R., Ward Mc. and Bill Mc. removed more flexible staybolt plugs from the top of the boiler. Many of the upper sleeves are wasted and will need to be repaired.
Tom T., Ed K. and Ed S. spent the day cleaning those removed plugs. Most of them are re-useable.
Dick P., Ken D. and George D. were busy bending replacement 1/4″ piping and planning for their required supports.
Pete A. resumed prepping flexible staybolt sleeves for later repairs. He is grinding away the remaining wasted metal for a uniform fit.
Last week Tad S. delivered more cabinets and drawer sets donated by Intel Corp. Most were missing shelves so Scott E. set about fabricating custom built ones.
Dave V. finished cleaning and prepping the whistle and root valve piping inside the smoke box. Reassembly will begin Wednesday.
The last safety refresher class will be held February 16th in the reefer at 9:00 AM. Remember, if you missed the first one you need to attend this next one. Also anyone who hasn’t paid their minimum yearly contributions will need to do so before March 1st to continue working on the locomotive. Please give or send your payments to Gail K., our Secretary, so she can make sure you are up to date.
Hope to see you on site this week and as always . . .
Keep on Steamin’,
