Over the last several weeks crews have been preparing the restoration site for our annual open house. Other volunteers finished last minute projects to be displayed such as the steam cylinder honing device.
This past Saturday the volunteer’s hard work over the last twelve months was exhibited. The open house was a resounding success! Last year the site entertained just over 1000 visitors. This Saturday saw a 70% increase with just over 1750 railroad fans that swarmed the site enjoying hot dogs, drinks, popcorn and live music. Live demonstrations of a water pump and a normally steam operated dynamo producing electrical power which illuminated a locomotive headlight.
Volunteers were busy giving tours and answering questions. Kudos to all the spouses that showed up to help out with preparing food and selling merchandise. Thanks to all the 2926ers who made this years open house the success that it was!
Wednesday we’ll be cleaning up the site for our normal work to proceed again. Come prepared to help put things back where they belong in order to make the site ready for work again.
Some may wonder when the winter hours will begin. Temps right now are still nice in the mornings and not too chilly, so we’ll continue on with our summer hours until it gets too cool to work at 7:30 and we’ll move it then to 9:00 for the winter. I’ll keep watching the temps and let everyone know. Perfect time of year to be working on the locomotive and other things.
Hope to see you at the site, and as always . . .
Keep on Steamin’,
