Rescued from Coronado Park in 2000, the giant steam locomotive has been restored to full operation by the all-volunteer crew of the New Mexico Steam Locomotive and Railroad Historical Society (NMSL&RHS).
NMSL&RHS is a non-profit organization staffed solely by dedicated volunteers whose mission is to fully restore the Baldwin 4-8-4 Steam Locomotive, AT&SF 2926, to operational status while promoting and educating the public about the ties of State economic development with rail transportation.
The specific goals of the New Mexico Steam Engine and Railroad Historical Society are:
Fully restore the Baldwin Northern 4-8-4 AT&SF road no. 2926 to an operational capability.
Perform periodic railroad passenger excursions using the restored Locomotive as head-end power.
Enhance Railroad Tourism in New Mexico.
Establish an educational program that creates an interest, an awareness and an appreciation of the importance of railroads from the past to the future.
Build a collection of historically important railroad items.
Accurately preserve, restore and display objects in a realistic and historically appropriate environment.
Serve as a bridge to understanding successful modern-day railroading.
Participate at the highest levels possible with city, county, state and national organizations in the promotion of railroad history.
The NMSL&RHS has an extensive educational and outreach program to give the public access to information concerning the status of our efforts to restore AT&SF locomotive No. 2926 and on the history of railroading in New Mexico.

Thank you for showing an interest in our group! We are a very eclectic group, so don't think you won't have anything to offer. Membership is open to the public.
Members participate and help with the project in basically two ways. They provide funding through donations and/or they actively participate "hands-on" by actually performing restoration labor on the locomotive and performing other administrative and public relations duties.
All work is on a volunteer basis (no member of the Society draws wages) and all proceeds go directly into materials and services required to restore the locomotive. Members are allowed to participate as much or as little as they desire. In fact, some of our out-of-state members drop-in and participate "hands-on" only a few times per year.
Whether you become an "active" or "passive" member of the Society, you will be helping drive this project to fruition.
