Work Session Status Week Ending 01/12/2013

Both work days this week began with morning temps in the mid to low teens.

Work continued on the side rod paint frame. The various parts were cut and welded together. Bolt holes were drilled to enable its disassembly for transport.

Repair welding began on the fireman’s side piston rod packing boss gussets. Three cracks have been discovered on this side.

Re-fabrication of 3/8\” air lines from the fireman’s side air tank is underway. These pipes were under the boiler jacket and sustained various degrees of metal wasting. The originals are used as patterns to make the bends.

The tee inside the smoke box supplying steam to the root valve and whistle was removed to clear large pieces of dislodged rust and scale.

More staybolt sleeve plugs were cleaned and inspected.

Friday evening some 47 volunteers and their other halves gathered at a local eatery for a winter get-together and new year kick-off. All you could eat barbeque and libations were enjoyed by all. Those that couldn’t make it we missed you and maybe next time you can make it.

The next morning Jon S. presented the first of two safety refresher classes. It was held at the Local 412 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union hall. The 2nd and final refresher will be sometime in February. If any volunteers miss the second one they will be required to attend the full new members orientation and safety class before resuming work on the locomotive.
