Work Session Status Week Ending 01/19/2013

Over the past week Ron T. designed and fabricated a tool to remove flexi staybolt plugs whose square heads are wasted and a conventional wrench will not work. John T. and Anthony P. assisted Ron remove several more stubborn plugs.

Pete A. was grinding wasted metal from some of the flexi staybolt sleeves preparing them for repair work. He also assisted Jerome A. and Ed K. clean and lap staybolt plugs.

Ward Mc. worked with Danny R. do another repair weld on a crack located on the fireman’s side piston rod packing boss. Danny began prepping another repair on the engineer’s side piston boss.

Randy Mc. returned this week and cab restoration resumed. Carlos O. tack-welded several retaining nuts to the roof which will secure the antennae. Don Mac. and Pete O. assisted.

John G. and Pat H. continued cleaning driver air brake assemblies.

Mike S. and Danny R., armed with his blue torch. began disassembly of the 3/4″ steam cock lines. The unions were a bit stubborn.

Dr. Mike and Dave V. continued rehab work on the whistle/root valve tee fitting, refinishing its sealing surfaces and removing rust/scale from its interior.

Dr. Mike also spent several hours cleaning the flexible staybolt sleeve pockets from scale and rust. The pockets were lubricated and a restored plug temporarily inserted. Dr. Mike accompanied Frank G. to the Bureau of Indian Affairs to renew the Memorandum of Understanding we have with them allowing us to remain on site for several more years as necessary.

Bob D. and Carlos completed the side rod holder. It will be taken to a local paint booth so the rods can receive a durable two part clear coat paint.

Dick P. assembled the fabricated 3/8″ air brake piping. He and Martin S. began bending the 1/4\” line.

Warren J. spent time updating the parts list and accompanying photos. He and Dave T. researched the list for photos of pipes and their locations prior to reinstallation.

Ed S. began cleaning and taping the side rod bushings to protect them during the painting process.

It looks to be a fairly warm week ahead so I hope to see you all on site, and as always . . .
