This week has been a busy one as small projects are being completed each work session.
The lubrication crew has checked out and passed lube oil through all the lines using all the various pumps required. A few leaks were found and addressed.
One of the air compressor lube oil pumps is not working properly so it will be examined this coming week.
Men worked on the turret cover again this week. They removed the remaining paint and adjusted the hinges on each side which appeared to be sprung at some time in the past. The light weight closure was ground off and a more substantial one was procured. One of the access doors was not curved properly to fit the frame so it was flattened out a bit for a better fit.
Two of the larger pipes from the steam dome to the turret were installed.
We had so many different check marks on the flexible staybolt plugs we decided to repaint each plug black for the next pressure test.
The air brake shoe backing plate grinder received some maintenance this past week and the grinding resumed. Pin bushings for those backers are also being removed and replaced. Some of those bushings are badly worn on one side.
Wednesday we relocated the tender up close to the locomotive so the engine house foot print could be laid out. Initial batter boards were put up Saturday and final layout is to begin Monday and Tuesday.
The machine shop continues to fabricate small parts as needed along with reconditioning of the washout plugs. All the smaller plugs under the boiler have been removed and are being evaluated.
The pilot end foot board steps were reinstalled. They had been removed to gain access to some of the lube oil piping and other projects.
Workers continue to position air brake components under the cab. New small air tank clamps were being fabricated as various piping was being installed.
Design work for the ATS system continues off site and is progressing quite well.
Our safety officer will be conducting a new member orientation this coming Saturday at 9:00 a.m. in the “reefer” .
That’s it for last week. Hope to see everyone at the site this week, and as always . . .
Keep on Steamin’,
